AT QUARRYVILLE
"'Uncle Charlie' Mayser Is Guest Speaker at Children's Playground Ceremonies
The Huffnagle Community Park, planned for the kindergarten and elementary school children at Quarryville was officially dedicated at ceremonies Sunday afternoon on the park grounds.
Guest speaker was Prof. Charles W. (uncle Charlie) Mayser, who stressed the necessity of discipline for children to enable them to grow into more mature persons. The speaker also brought out that the playground will fll the gap caused by lack of recreational programs for small children.
Acting as master of ceremonies for the dedication was William Crook, Jr., president of the Borough Council, who introduced Mrs. Judson Wagner, wife of one of the donors of the land, to the audience. Mrs. Wagner's husband was not present and neither were Mr. and Mrs. Estel Wagner, the other donors, who at present are touring the country.
The program opened with the invocation by the Rev. Mr. Pamer, new pastor of Memorial Methodist Church, Quarryville; after which Maurice Lefever led the group in a salute to the flag.
HUFFNAGLES INTRODUCED
Also introduced by Crook were Mr. and Mrs. Harry W Huffnagle of Quarryville, who have borne the cost of the park development up to this point. It is in their honor that the park has been named by Borough Council.
Participating in the program were members of Borough Council and the honor guard of the Quarryville American Legion. The benediction was pronounced by Rev. Mr. Parmer.
According to Mr. Crook, who is an ex-officio administrator of a committee which will govern the park, it will be open from 9 a. m. to 12 noon and 2 to 5 p. m. daily, except Sunday, under supervision of several girls of the community.
PLANS DATE TO '47
Original plans for the park began in 1947 and by today the three and a half acre tract of land, located one block from Church St., has been landscaped and the best equipment provided for the children's use.
Slides and swings are of stainless steel while the "Tot Lot" area is fenced in with Cyprus clapboard. The sandbox is provided with a drainage system so water will not collect in it. Also included are drinking fountains and parking areas.
The park will be administered by a committee of five, including two council members and three citizens. They are Charles Gochnauer, chairman; Mrs. John Hoffman, Riser Strickler, Raymond Hostetter and Jay Eshleman.
